Key facts at a glance

  • In Austria, everyone born on or after 1 January 1955 who is insured has a pension account. You can check it online free of charge at any time with ID Austria or via FinanzOnline.
  • Long periods of part-time work or childcare often lead to a much lower pension later. The earlier you know where you stand, the more you can do.
  • An emergency fund of three to six months of spending is often recommended before you invest long term.
  • For independent basics there is Finanznavi, the official financial education portal of the Austrian Ministry of Finance and the Austrian National Bank.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I check my pension account in Austria?

Anyone born on or after 1 January 1955 who was insured in Austria has a pension account. You can check it online free of charge at any time with ID Austria or via FinanzOnline, or request the balance by post from your pension insurance institution.

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

A simple rule of thumb for your household budget: around 50 percent of net income for fixed costs, 30 percent for leisure and wishes, 20 percent for saving and retirement. It is a starting point, not a must.

How big should an emergency fund be?

Three to six months of spending in an instant-access account is often recommended. What suits you depends on your job, family and fixed costs.
